New Assignment: Putting it all together

So you new assignment, and probably the one you will work on until the end of the semester is…

You are going to tell a story. Make one up or re-imagine an old story. Something simple though. Maybe a fairy tale, or a nursery rhyme. Pick your poison.


  • 12 page “booklet” design, four-color, full-bleed, saddle-stitched. The story happens in 8 to 10 pages
  • 12 page storybook website: retask your print design into a website – 12 pages (hyperlinks, yeah)
  • 30 second animation (Adobe Animate or Photoshop Cell-frame)

You can use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create the assets to correspond with your text in the story. You must include a photograph of yourself as the designer, illustrator and/or author.


  • April 19: Story determined with rough storyboard or a rough “dummy” of the booklet (roughly sketched out ideas of the imagery needed in the story)
  • April 28: Mid-assignment critique: all components
  • May 5: Booklet and Website due
  • May 8 (Final): Animation due – we’ll watch them in class.

This is a big assignment, but you have developed the skills this semester to pull it off… if you keep it simple, focus on the story and if you utilize design (Big D design and little d Design) to solve the problems. We have roughly four weeks to accomplish these three devices (print, web and animation).

Web version/Newsletter

Deadline for the designing newsletters webpage/website is on April 7th. Do what you can from the chapters you have read and are reading. Next week, read chapters 9, 10 and 11. Chapter 11 is the first chapter in CSS. CSS is what will ultimately allow you to make the page look good, to control the design the way you want it.

pdf Separation Proofing

I showed you today in class the process for printing a .ps file as a separation so you can check to make sure your 2-color newsletter has the spot color correctly set up. It is the same process (except this time you print booklet to make an 11 x 17 inch spread) to make a composite .ps file, just select separations instead of the Composite CMYK in the print dialog box. Distill the .ps file and open up the .pdf. If your file is correct, you should have 4 11 x 17, black and white pages in your .pdf. 2 for the front and 2 for the back. One of the two on the front and back will be the black plate and the other 1 of the two will be the spot color you select.

Keep this .pdf to show me. Once you confirm your spot color is correct (if it is not – fix it before you proceed) you can reprint the .ps file as a color composite, distill to the new composite .pdf and then duplex print your proof for Monday.


Proof newsletter

Hi guys, OK, I want an initial duplex printed, folded proof (print an 11 x 17 b/w proof and fold in half) of your newsletter on Monday, March 6. The big color printer in OP1224 is capable of duplex printing on an 11 x 17 sheet of paper. Also, a reminder to be reading in Chapters 1,2 and 3 in the Learning Web Design Book. These chapters contain lead-in general info that will give you background for the next set of doing things chapters. So, read them over mid-term break. We will start integrating web coding (using a simple text editor) into the assignment rotation after midterm. Again, you can also use and for web coding tutorials and information.

Newsletters, oh newsletters

Here are the specs for the new InDesign assignment.

4 page newsletter, 2 color (one spot color and black), no bleed, duplex printed.


  • Develop a title and masthead for this newsletter
  • Must use a grid in the layout
  • Must be 4, 8,5 x 11 inch pages set up for spreads in InDesgin
  • Must use character and paragraph styles sheets
  • Must import at least one .eps vector graphic and one .tif raster graphic
  • Must use one pull quote

Pull the copy off of the google drive folder (newletter copy.rft) and you can download the typesetting rules of thumb that are in the folder as well.

Read the copy and figure out how to organize the content, typeset the copy and create an attractive layout. The articles themselves should offer suggestions.

I want to see an initial proof (B/W on 11×17) on March 6th.

Printing specs and mounting info

For the Photoshop Day Map assignment: print to a 13 x 19 sheet of paper. Flush mount. Maximum print area on a non-bleed 13 x 19 print is 12.75 x 18.625.

For the Currency Or WWI poster rebuild: print to a 13 x 19 sheet of paper too. Again, Maximum print area is 12.75 x 18.625. At least one dimension of your design should be at the maximum allowable print area. Does this make sense?

Do not print with crop marks this time. Brownie points if someone blogs the reason why on their blog.

Print outs for both are Due March 8 – mounted and ready for presentation. Make sure you have and use the appropriate tools and supplies, so the final presentation looks professionally done. PRACTICE BEFORE COMMITTING TO THE FINAL PRESENTATION.

Photoshop and Illustrator Deadlines

I want to see laser proofs on 8.5 x 11 paper on March 1st (Illustrator – Personal Currency or WWI poster rebuild) and March 3 (Photoshop Day map). The final 13 x 19 inkjet printouts for both are due on March 8th (1 printout of the Day Map and 1 printout of the WWI poster rebuild Or 1 printout of front and back multiples of the Personal Currency – as many as you can fit on 13 x 19 – front on the left and the back on the right… repeated – you might want to show me how this one looks on a 13 x 19 sheet before you do the inkjet print).
